WWE Abandons Attempt To Trademark Bálor Club

According to PWInsider the WWE abandoned their attempt to trademark the name Bálor Club back on June 22. This may have something to do with Baylor Univeristy. Baylor University had requested time to file an opposition to the trademark. Baylor still had not filed by the time WWE abandoned the request.

McConnell Musings: This may finally put to rest the idea of a Bálor Club on the main roster but this will most likely give rise to the idea of both Finn Bálor and AJ Styles together in The Club, along with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. If this is the direction that WWE is going in, then it makes sense not to have a “new guy” coming in and renaming The Club after himself, especially with AJ being presented as a main event star. Perhaps WWE is going to again attempt to get New Japan to allow them to call the group The Bullet Club, or perhaps a totally new name for the group is coming. All we know is that this adds a new layer to the burning questions surrounding Finn and his call up to the main roster.

G1 Climax 2016 Blocks Announced

According to multiple sources, including F4WOnline,  the A and B blocks of the 26th G1 Climax Tournament were announced in Japan at the most recent New Japan Pro Wrestling house show. For those that have not watched the G1 Climax Tournament in the past, the wrestlers in the tournament are broken into two blocks. The wrestlers in those blocks compete against each other in a round-robin format until a winner is determined for each block. Those two block winners then face each other with the winner usually getting the right to face the IWGP Heavyweight Champion in the main event of the annual January 4th, Wrestle Kingdom show. This years A and B Blocks are:

– A Block: Togi Makabe, Satoshi Kojima, Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto, Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Seiya Sanada, Naomichi Marufuji, Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi

– B Block: Katsuyori Shibata, Yuji Nagata, Tomoaki Honma, Michael Elgin, Toru Yano, Tetsuya Naito, Evil, Kenny Omega, Yoshi-Hashi, Katsuhiko Nakajima

In addition to the names in each block, New Japan also announced some of the key match-ups to take place as part of this years tournament and the dates of those matches:

  • 7/18: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Sanada, Okada vs. Marufuji
  • 7/22: Nagata vs. Naito, Shibata vs. Honma
  • 7/23: Tanahashi vs. Makabe, Okada vs. Sanada
  • 7/24: Nakajima vs. Shibata, Honma vs. Yoshi-Hashi
  • 7/25: Makabe vs. Sanada, Okada vs. Goto
  • 7/27: Yano vs. Naito, Shibata vs. Elgin
  • 7/28: Ishii vs. Marufuji, Goto vs. Sanada
  • 7/30: Omega vs. Elgin, Shibata vs. Naito
  • 7/31: Makabe vs. Marufuji, Tanahashi vs. Goto
  • 8/1: Yoshi Hashi vs. Nakajima, Honma vs. Naito
  • 8/3: Tanahashi vs. Ishii, Makabe vs. Okada
  • 8/4: Nakajima vs. Naito, Shibata vs. Omega
  • 8/6: Tanahashi vs. Marufuji, Okada vs. Ishii
  • 8/7: Omega vs. Nagata, Naito vs. Evil
  • 8/8: Ishii vs. Sanada, Tanahashi vs. Kojima
  • 8/10: Honma vs. Elgin, Shibata vs. Nagata
  • 8/12: Goto vs. Marufuji, Tanahashi vs. Okada
  • 8/13: Shibata vs. Evil, Naito vs. Omega

McConnell Musings: This look like a very interesting G1 Climax Tournament, although not as star-studded of a field in years past with the absences of names like AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson and Kota Ibushi. A Block likely comes down to Okada and Tanahashi while B Block is probably Omega and Naito.  A Block spolier is Goto while the B Block spoiler are Elgin and Shibata. This will provide many classic matches and I am sure it will be another great G1 tournament.

Big News Coming Out Of The Latest ROH Television Tapings

Spoilers ahead so you have been warned…

In 3

According to F4WOnline, at the most recent Ring Of Honor Television Taping we had a few major developments.

-Roderick Strong worked his final match for ROH, losing to Dalton Castle. Both men hugged afterward while the crowd chanted “Thank You Roddy.” Strong spoke to the crowd, thanked them and said he hoped to work for ROH again someday.

-Adam Cole and the Young Bucks attacked Kyle O’Reilly because O’Reilly was getting a shot at ROH World Championship against Jay Lethal. Cole felt he was being jumped in line for a title shot. Later in the night O’Reilly still took on Lethal for the title but Lethal retained in what was said to be a great match. After the match the Bullet Club attacked both men. Nigel McGuinness, on-screen ROH Matchmaker, said that Cole will never get a title shot as long as he is in charge. Lethal then asked that he be added to the main event of the show.

-Jay Lethal and the Briscoes defeat the Bullet Club. Following the match the Bullet Club tied up Lethal in the ring ropes. Cole then cut off the dreadlocks of Lethal before shaving the head of Lethal, violently. Bullet Club led the crowd in chants of “that’s too sweet” and directed chants of “you deserved it” at Lethal.

McConnell Musings: Glad to see Stong getting a classy send off. Putting Castle over only goes to show how much of a class act Strong is and how highly they think of Castle, as they should. The storyline advancement of Cole vs Lethal took a very interesting turn with Nigel declaring Cole will never get a title shot, Lethal willingly teaming with the Briscoes to take on the Bullet Club, and then the hair cutting of Lethal by Cole. I am a huge fan of Cole and I can’t wait to see him in the WWE someday, but it looks like ROH is doing all they can to keep Cole happy for now and push him until the time comes for him to make a choice of finally going to WWE or staying in ROH.

Brock Lesnar Revealed As The Cover Athlete For WWE 2K17 Video Game

Earlier today WWE announced that Brock Lesnar would be on the cover of WWE 2K17 video game. According to Forbes, the game will be on multiple platforms such as PS4, PS3 and Xbox One. WWE 2K17 will be officially released on October 11th.

McConnell Musings: WWE continues to try and strike while the iron is hot on Lesnar. His match  at UFC 200 is continuing to grow in importance for himself, UFC and WWE. A loss by Lesnar would be a huge blow to himself and WWE. UFC would likely be OK with the loss but a win could generate huge news and maybe lead to another Lesnar fight.
